State Department spokesperson demanded an end to politically motivated harassment, including attacks on opposition campaign offices –

The spokesman for the United States Department of State, Matthew Miller, warned this Wednesday that any type of violation of the Barbados agreement will have consequences. This follows the arrest of three regional campaign managers of the presidential candidate María Corina Machado and the issuance of arrest warrants against journalists, human rights defenders and retired military personnel.

“The United States is deeply concerned by the issuance of arrest warrants and detentions against at least 33 Venezuelans, including members of the democratic opposition, civil society, former military personnel and journalists. “The arrests without due process go against the spirit of the October 2023 electoral roadmap agreement signed between the Unitary Platform and representatives of Nicolás Maduro,” he told the media.null

He also demanded an end to politically motivated harassment, including attacks on opposition campaign offices.

“The United States continues to support the Venezuelan people in their desire for a peaceful restoration of democracy,” said the official.

However, he warned that “actions that go against the spirit and letter of the Barbados Agreement will have consequences.”

“We urge Maduro and his representatives to adhere to the electoral roadmap agreement, including announcing a clear schedule for the 2024 presidential elections, and to reinstate all political candidates,” he concluded.
