The massive influx of Cuban migrants to Florida in recent years has led to significant challenges in the economic and social landscape of the state, particularly in the city of Hialeah. With an estimated 75,000 Cuban migrants currently residing in Hialeah, the city is grappling with an affordable housing crisis that is affecting its residents.
Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo has highlighted the alarming issue, pointing out that the city is one of the primary destinations for Cuban migrants in the United States. He emphasized the impact of the influx on the city, stating that a significant portion of the 400,000 migrants who have arrived in the U.S. in recent years have settled in South Florida, with around half choosing to make Hialeah their home.
Mayor Bovo addressed the press and expressed concern over the lack of accurate federal data on the true number of immigrants in the city. He cited the Cuban community and other migrants as major contributors to the affordable housing crisis, noting a significant and rapid increase in rental costs.
“We have seen an abysmal increase in rent, 100% from one day to the next,” Mayor Bovo said. “Residents who were paying $1,000.00 USD suddenly found their rent increased to $2,000.00 USD.”
The impact of the immigration influx on cities like Hialeah is often overshadowed by larger cities on the southern border, according to the mayor.
