They establish limits on the amount of whey for the sale of milk

The National Government has announced the update of the criteria of Decree 616 of 2006, which regulates the use of whey in milk intended for human consumption. This decision comes after working groups that involved the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Health, and the private sector, with the aim of addressing concerns about the excessive addition of whey to sanitized milk, such as UHT, pasteurized and powdered milk. .

The resulting agreement, embodied in Resolution 2270 of 2023 of the Ministry of Health, establishes a maximum permitted limit of 30 mg of whey per liter of milk. This value will be used as a reference in the inspection, surveillance and control tasks carried out by the National Institute for Food and Drug Surveillance (Invima). To guarantee the precision of this limit, the Ministry of Agriculture has reported that field sampling was carried out in the dairy production chain and analytical tests validated by the National Accreditation Body (Onac).

Additionally, the possibility of Agrosavia having an analysis laboratory that complements the tasks of Invima is contemplated. This laboratory will be responsible for determining more efficiently the amount of whey added to milk. If the established amount is exceeded, it will be considered adulteration of the milk.

With this measure, the Government seeks to guarantee transparency in the supply of dairy products, avoiding practices that may result in the marketing of products other than those advertised. The update of these guidelines reflects the Government’s commitment to quality and food safety in the country.
