Trump says abortion legislation is up to the states

Former President Donald Trump Calls for Abortion Legislation to Be Left to States

In a video released on Monday, former President Donald Trump stated that abortion legislation should be determined by individual states, following the overturning of the Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision. Trump claimed responsibility for overturning Roe v. Wade and emphasized that the issue should now be decided by the people in each state through votes or legislation.

“I was proudly the person responsible for overturning Roe v. Wade,” Trump said in the video posted on Truth Social. He went on to express his belief that each state should have the authority to determine its own laws regarding abortion, with some states potentially adopting more conservative approaches than others.

While Trump did not specify the exact number of weeks at which he believes abortion should be prohibited, he reiterated his support for exceptions in cases of incest, rape, and when the mother’s life is in danger. The former president had previously expressed support for a federal ban on abortion after 15 weeks, with similar exceptions.

Trump’s video drew criticism from the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, which expressed disappointment with his stance. The group’s president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, stated that unborn children and their mothers deserve national protections and defense against the abortion industry.

It is important to note that Trump’s claims that “every jurist, on both sides” wanted Roe v. Wade overturned and that abortion is now legal as desired by all are false. Many scholars who support abortion rights, as well as a majority of Americans in opinion polls, did not support the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

The debate over abortion rights continues to be a contentious issue in American politics, with differing opinions on how the issue should be addressed at the state and federal levels. Trump’s comments add fuel to an already heated discussion surrounding reproductive rights and the role of government in regulating abortion laws.
