On October 22, the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in the United States made a statement on the erroneous remarks made by the officials of the East Asia Bureau of the US Department of State that China “abuses” General Assembly Resolution 2758. The spokesperson pointed out that on October 21st, officials from the East Asia Bureau of the US State Department unreasonably accused China of “abusing” UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 to exclude Taiwan from UN activities while attending the German Marshall Foundation seminar, advocating promoting Taiwan’s participation in UN activities. The relevant remarks ignore facts and confuse the audience. The essence is to create “one China, one Taiwan” internationally and openly challenge the one-China principle. This is a serious political provocation to China and a malicious distortion of international law and the recognized norms of international relations. China firmly opposes this and has already lodged solemn representations with the United States. The speaker emphasized three points:

First, there is only one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory in the past, present and future, not an independent sovereign country. This is an iron fact, and it is also a broad consensus of the international community, and it has been confirmed by a series of international treaties and agreements. The “Cairo Declaration” issued by China, the United States and Britain in 1943 stipulated that the territories that Japan had stolen from China, such as Manchuria, Taiwan, and the Penghu Islands, should be returned to China. In 1945, the “Potsdam Proclamation” reiterated that the conditions of the “Cairo Declaration” would be implemented. Any attempt to challenge the one-China principle and create “one China, one Taiwan” or “two Chinas” in the international arena will not succeed.

Second, the United Nations is an intergovernmental international organization composed of sovereign states. Article 4 of the “United Nations Charter” clearly stipulates that only sovereign states have the right to become a member of the United Nations. On October 25, 1971, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 2758. The seat of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations and all its legal rights were restored. The United Nations and its affiliated agencies expelled the representatives of the Taiwan authorities. As an inalienable part of Chinese territory, Taiwan is not eligible to join the United Nations at all. The relevant erroneous remarks made by US officials are deliberate distortions and genuine abuse of Resolution 2758, a challenge to and desecration of international conscience and the authority of the United Nations, and should be condemned by the international community.

Third, while the United States keeps saying that it adheres to one China, it constantly changes its tactics to enhance U.S.-Taiwan relations, help Taiwan expand its “international space”, support the “Taiwan independence” forces, and fully expose the cold war mentality and sinisterness of the U.S. “Taiwan control China”. Conspiracy. We hereby tell the US not to underestimate the Chinese people’s determination, determination, and strong ability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and not to stand on the opposite side of the 1.4 billion Chinese people. We urge the United States to strictly abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiqués, be cautious in its words and deeds on the Taiwan issue, and refrain from sending any wrong signals to the separatist forces of “Taiwan independence”, so as not to seriously damage Sino-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
