[NTD News June 10, 2021, Beijing time]US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin issued a secret order on June 9 to list the CCP as the top challenge to the U.S. defense policy and call for several action plans to counter the CCP.
According to a report by VOA, the secret order issued by Austin is aimed at more effectively responding to challenges from the Chinese Communist Party.
A senior defense official who asked not to be named said in a briefing to the media: “This directive from the minister is ultimately about organizing the internal affairs of the Ministry and ensuring that it can respond to the stated priorities of China (community). .”
The Pentagon’s statement said that these actions will improve the military’s capabilities to “reinvigorate our network of allies and partners, increase deterrence, and accelerate the development of new concepts of warfare.” However, the details of these action plans were not disclosed.
The U.S. military has regarded the CCP as a “pacing threat”, that is, the CCP’s military development pace is used as a measure of the U.S. military development pace.
Officials from the Ministry of National Defense pointed out that the CCP’s influence is very important for its military modernization. The Ministry of National Defense has taken this into consideration, but the Ministry of National Defense has not evaluated the financial and economic policies.
In recent years, the United States has always regarded countering the CCP as the core of its national security policy. The two countries are wrestling at every level, from science and technology, human rights to the military.
US President Biden ordered the Pentagon in February to set up a special task force to deal with the CCP. The task is to review the Department of Defense’s policies related to the CCP and list the most important priorities.
According to officials, the working group reviewed thousands of pages of documents, conducted interviews with current and former defense officials, and consulted with other government agencies and Congress. The directive issued by Austin is the result of recommendations made by this task force.
Austin said at a congressional hearing in January this year, “China (the Communist Party) is the most important challenge for the United States in the future.”
Bradley, a defense expert at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (Foundation for Defense of Democracies). Bradley Bowman believes that as long as the Pentagon pays more attention to the CCP’s strategy and resource allocation, whatever it does is a good thing.
In May, the Biden administration’s defense budget used more than US$5 billion to counter the CCP’s “Pacific Deterrence Initiative” and focus on competition in the Indo-Pacific region. The missile system allocates funds to improve US combat readiness in the Indo-Pacific region.
However, some parliamentarians and experts criticized that this budget is still not strong enough to counter the CCP. Ashley Townshend of the University of Sydney’s Center for American Studies told Reuters: “The Biden government has invested heavily in research and development to ensure the military’s competitive advantage in future high-end conflicts. Although this approach is correct, it’s not. It should be at the expense of enhancing the short-term conventional deterrence against China (the Communist Party).”
Bowman also criticized: “Unfortunately, in the budget request just sent to Capitol Hill not long ago, the Indo-Pacific Command said that many of the things they need were either unavailable or underfunded.”
