Vietnam’s official VNA news agency, Le Thi Thu Hang, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, said on March 7 when answering a reporter’s question about China’s military exercises in the waters of the East China Sea (claimed by Vietnam) issued by the South China Sea Maritime Safety Administration. Le Thi Thu Heng said that Vietnam has always been closely following the developments in the East China Sea (called by Vietnam), in line with international law, especially the 1982United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea(UNCLOS 1982) on the basis of sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction.
According to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Seas, some of the waters covered by the Chinese side’s announcement are included in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf, a Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesman said.
The news said that Vietnam has negotiated with China on this issue.
