Weather warning: “Up to one meter of fresh snow in summit regions”

East Tyrol, Upper Carinthia and Salzburg are affected on Friday. Fresh snow is to be expected here down to low altitudes, which could cause problems on the roads and rail connections, as it was said in a press release.

The reason for the snowfall is a cold front that is moving from the northwest to Austria on Friday night. At the same time, a low pressure area forms over northern Italy, which directs moist air towards the Alps. “This is a typical weather situation for snowfall and rain in most of Austria, with a focus on the southern side of the Alps,” said meteorologist Andreas Mansberger from Geosphere Austria.

Snowfall level drops to up to 800 meters

The snowfall limit on Friday will be around 800 and 1,400 meters. Particularly in the area from Upper Carinthia to East Tyrol and the southern regions from Salzburg to the main Tyrolean Alpine ridge, ten to 30 centimeters of new snow is expected in many valleys over the course of Friday, and in some cases a little more. “In the summit regions of the Carnic Alps and the Karawanken there is around one meter of fresh snow,” says Mansberger.

Winter conditions on the Tauern motorway and Brenner

The snowfall also affects main connections such as the Tauern Autobahn and the Brenner Pass. Winter conditions are expected here on Friday. In Lower Carinthia and in the very low altitudes of Upper Carinthia it will rain heavily at times on Friday, a total of around 30 to 50 liters per square meter, and significantly more in the border regions with Slovenia and Italy. The snowfall limit is between 1,000 and 1,400 meters. The weather will be friendlier again at the weekend.
