Animals play an important role at Gottorf Landmarkt – such as horses. The “Horsemanship” on the eastern wing of the castle demonstrates how humans and animals can communicate with each other, unrestrained, so to speak. “I always say: This is our horse whisperer,” announces organizer Ina Giernas from the state museums. The Gottorfer Landmarkt is not a zoo. Horse-drawn horses show how a forest can be managed without heavy machinery: the horses transport wood carefully. And don’t forget: There are horse races – but only with hobby horses on the playground for the children.

Access again via the south bridge

This year, according to the Gottorf State Museums, the country market is bigger than ever. After initial hesitation, a fifth more exhibitors than last year have confirmed their participation. A big advantage: Access to the Gottorf Castle Island via the south bridge is possible again after months of construction work. The core of the event will once again be many stands from producers of sustainable food.

Quality instead of quantity – the perfect steak

During live cooking, utilization specialist Christian Woska from Wanderup (Schleswig-Flensburg district), also known as “the butcher”, wants to prepare and prepare the perfect steak. His motto: “Eat less meat, but eat high quality meat.” This also applies to the BBQ show. The “Feinheimisch” gastro association has adopted a similar philosophy. Several stands combine on the site to form a Feinheimisch street. Regional ingredients are very important here.

Balloon and NDR dialogue bus in front of the castle

For the first time, the hot air balloon held on a rope takes off from the stalls area in front of the castle. Ina Giernas is looking forward to the new perspective. The NDR dialogue bus is again in front of the castle. Anyone interested can talk to NDR employees here.

Stage program with Matthias Stührwoldt and Grünschabel

What would a castle be without notable royals? With the Tench Queen and Princess, the Raspberry Princess from Gut Steinwehr, the Dithmarscher Cabbage Regent, the North Frisian Lamb Queen and Princess and the Crocus Blossom Queen, the country market becomes a top meeting of representatives of regional lifestyle. The stage program includes the Low German Poetry Slam with Matthias Stührwohldt and the children’s concerts with Grünschabel. The State Theater’s puppet stage is set up for the little ones. And everyone can have fun on a straw bouncy castle.

Huge colorful installations in the state museums

Meanwhile, it’s worth taking a look at the exhibitions in the Gottorf walls. A current highlight are the room-filling, colorful installations by the Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos. Contemporary wood carving art by Matthias Mansen is also presented in large format. Ingo Günther’s illuminated globes artistically illustrate mountains of debt, vehicle density, migration, marine pollution and military spending. Regardless of this, the Globushaus in the Baroque Garden is also open and carriages can be taken to it.

Donkeys on a special mission

Back to the animals: A classic are the herding dog shows that keep a flock of sheep together. But animals that you wouldn’t expect can do something like this: for the first time, two donkeys are supposed to show at the country market that they can look after the chickens from the Ankersholt organic farm. Ina Giernas herself is excited: “My children are already looking forward to it!”

Bus shuttles from Marktkauf and train station

When traveling from Schleswig, she recommends using the park and ride service every 20 minutes from Marktkauf at the television tower in Schleswig. Free shuttle buses also run from Schleswig train station to the castle. Guarded bicycle parking spaces are available at the north bridge to the Gottorf Castle Island. The castle island is open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The tickets have become more expensive due to the more extensive program: they now cost 12 euros for adults. If you want to avoid waiting times at the checkout, you can online booking.
