The main problems arise at the Agro-environmental Technical Institute, Nuestra Señora de Fátima, Nuestra Señora de la Pobreza and the Demetrio Salazar Castillo Normal Superior School. The rectors took the initiative to send letters to the mayor to ask him to improve conditions on the campuses.

In Tadó, the students returned to classes on January 15 with the hope of learning and sharing with their classmates in the midst of the physical deterioration and lack of resources that persist in educational institutions: destroyed bathrooms with damaged toilet batteries, roofs with leaks, classrooms without fans, lack of computers and, in some cases, absence of school transportation service.

This situation affects the Nuestra Señora de Fátima, Nuestra Señora de la Pobreza, Normal Superior Demetrio Salazar Castillo schools and the Agro-environmental Technical Institute. The students of the Nuestra Señora de Fátima institution, Mumbú headquarters, for example, receive classes in a communal house due to the deteriorated state of its facilities.

Given this scenario, some rectors prepared reports and sent letters to Mayor Juan Carlos Palacios requesting his urgent support to manage and intervene in the improvement of the conditions of each educational establishment. And, in the case of the Normal Superior Demetrio Salazar Castillo, facing a debt that amounts to more than 30 million pesos for the electricity service.

What’s going on?

According to Carlos Copete Gómez, rector of the Nuestra Señora de Fátima institution, the eleven headquarters need interventions that range from “the improvement of the physical plants to the provision of fans.”

“We hope that the mayor takes steps soon and the elements we need for proper functioning can reach the institutions: good desks, bathrooms, computers and transportation service,” says Copete.

Among the requests written in their report is also the hiring of four school buses, taking into account that the transportation service provided by the two current buses is insufficient. “They must make several trips and the students must get up too early and are significantly exposed since the institution does not have surveillance,” the letter reads.

For her part, the rector of the Normal Superior Demetrio Salazar Castillo, Eude Celina Ramírez, says that “although all institutions have similar problems, mine needs a lot of investment since the facilities present general problems and we do not have adequate ventilation or a audience”.

In her letter, the rector also states that covers are needed for four sports spaces, maintenance of the floors of three classrooms and new school supplies: 200 computers, 300 desks, 500 chairs and 70 desks for the teaching staff. In addition, she highlights the importance of complying with the institution’s financial obligations, among which are the payment of 30 million pesos for electric energy service, four million pesos for water and two million pesos for the internet.

Guido Ledesma, academic coordinator of the Agro-environmental Technical Institute, says that “from the main school to the schools they need bathrooms for students to relieve themselves.” Furthermore, “the school has had difficulty in the school transportation service for many years because the bus we have is more than ten years old, it has already completed its cycle, it gets stuck a lot and most of the resources are spent on repairing it” .

Finally, Marcial Blandon, rector of the Nuestra Señora de la Pobreza institution, says that, although the diagnosis has not yet been made, he knows that the construction of several classrooms is needed at the San Pedro campus and an enclosure system at the Reinaldo campus.

What people say?

Carmen Copete, mother of a student at the Normal Superior Demetrio Salazar Castillo, says that “the school needs to be improved, the classrooms need ventilation or air conditioning since our boys and girls feel suffocated or desperate due to the heat and want to get out of the school. the halls.”

“The school has weeds, it lacks paint, adaptation of the bathrooms, repair of the roof and an auditorium or room for parent meetings,” adds Copete.

Regarding the Francisco Miranda school, Leidy Mosquera, mother of the family, says that “it is a very old school and is in poor condition.” “The recreation and sports area where the students train needs adaptation and the dining room needs elements so that the children can sit and eat in peace. This school has part of the roof that leaks impressively when it rains,” she denounces.

What do the authorities say?

The mayor of Tadó, Juan Carlos Palacios, recognizes that “we have deteriorated more than 50% of the educational institutions.” “Today we are very bad in infrastructure. I have been able to confirm and it is true that we must work in harmony to achieve that dignity in educational matters,” he says.

According to the president, the administration has taken steps to present the needs to the Ministry of Education. “I will do everything possible so that in the first semester we can do the job of dignifying our campuses. Soon we are going to deliver some real estate and we will work hand in hand with the rectors to see how we can improve education in the municipality,” says Palacios.

Despite having an agreement signed with the Mayor’s Office, through which educational institutions received financial resources with the purpose of ‘strengthening educational quality’, the rectors agree that these funds are insufficient. According to Carlos Copete Gómez, rector of the Nuestra Señora de Fátima institution in Playa de Oro, the funds only covered the payment of transportation, public services and the maintenance of some headquarters.

Given this situation, Mayor Palacios assures that the new administration will review the agreements to “make a good decision.” “We still do not know if we will continue with the agreements until we do the review so as not to make mistakes and so that the educational processes work in the best way.”

According to Brenda Mosquera, municipal education coordinator, “we have minimal resources to intervene and mitigate the situation. “We are going to solve the most advanced problems and then take steps to solve the underlying problem because the reason for our municipality’s existence is its children.”
