In court documents about Jeffrey Epstein released on Monday, a suspected victim of the American sex offender claims that there are “sex tapes” of Bill Clinton and Britain’s Prince Andrew, among others. In the videos, the men are said to have sex with underage girls.
However, the woman who reported the existence of the tapes, Sarah Ransome, retracted this claim years ago. The documents released Monday quote from an email that Ransome submitted as a victim impact statement in 2015 in a criminal case against Epstein’s ex-partner Ghislaine Maxwell for defamation.
“[Mijn] girlfriend had sexual intercourse with Clinton, Prince Andrew and Richard Branson, in fact sex tapes were filmed on every single occasion,” Ransome wrote in her statement. “I eventually managed to convince her to send me some of the video footage she kept involving all three men… I backed up the footage to several USB sticks and transferred it safely to various locations in Europe.” In 2019, Ransome admitted in an interview with a journalist from The New Yorker that she had made up her story.
Her claim was previously doubted when she approached the New York Post in 2016 with the claim that she had sex tapes of at least six prominent figures, including Clinton, but also Donald Trump and British businessman Richard Branson. When reporters wanted to see footage before publishing it, Ransome withdrew her offer for an interview.
Lawyers for both Epstein and Maxwell and prosecutors also delved into Ransome’s claim at the time and failed to get it verified. Maxwell was ultimately sentenced to 20 years in prison for, among other things, recruiting underage girls for sexual abuse. Epstein himself committed suicide in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting his criminal trial. He was previously convicted of sexual offenses in 2008.
