The Belarusian woman (31) took a walk with her boyfriend on Friday in the Demänovská Valley in the Tatra Mountains, in northern Slovakia. During that walk they encountered a bear and fled in different directions.

The man was able to get himself to safety and informed the emergency services. They found the woman’s lifeless body on Friday evening, with the help of sniffer dogs. The bear was still in the immediate vicinity at that time and had to be chased away by a forest ranger with gunshots. It is not clear whether the woman was killed by the bear or whether she died in a fall during her flight.

Second attack

On Saturday, two people were also injured in an attack by a bear in the village of Liptovský Mikuláš, about twenty kilometers away. A 49-year-old woman suffered a shoulder injury, and a 72-year-old man suffered a head injury. The police chased the animal from the village. It is not clear whether it is the same bear.

Brown bears were exterminated in Slovakia in the 1930s, but the population has recovered in recent decades. There are currently an estimated 1,275 units in the country. The number of attacks by bears has been on the rise in recent years.
