FC Ingolstadt is lucky: Only when the indicated stoppage time against Arminia Bielefeld had already expired did Sebastian Groenning score against Arminia Bielefeld to make it 1-1 (0-1). He prevented the Schanzer from suffering a fourth home defeat in a row.
A year ago on Saturday, Michael Köllner took over as coach at FC Ingolstadt. For a long time it looked like there was nothing to celebrate for the 54-year-old in the sports park after the game against Arminia Bielefeld. It wasn’t until substitute Sebastian Groenning made happy faces for the Schanzer in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Previously, Ingolstadt missed many good chances, especially from set pieces, and Louis Oppie scored for the guests (40th).

Nothing noteworthy happened in the first half hour. There was no sign of fresh momentum at FCI after the recent 3-0 away win in Unterhaching. It wasn’t until the 29th minute that Bryang Kayo fired the first semi-dangerous shot at the Bielefeld goal, although Arminia keeper Jonas Kersken had no trouble with it.
Ten minutes later, Bielefeld went on the attack twice: Marius Funk was able to keep the first attempt – a free kick from Leandro Putaro, which was deflected by an Ingolstadt player – into the FCI box. Shortly afterwards he lost against Louis Oppie – 0:1 (40th).
Only Groenning beats Arminia keeper Kersken
Shortly before the break, Ryan Malone had a great opportunity to make it 1-1 with a header from a Felix Keidel corner, but Kersken was there again. And the same thing happened after the change: corner from Keidel, header from Malone – but right at the keeper (51′).
The previously weak game now picked up a little more momentum. David Kopacz with a shot from the edge of the penalty area and again Malone (66′) didn’t aim precisely enough. The killer instinct in front of the goal was missing. On the other side, Merveille Biankadi and Oppie again had opportunities to make it 0-2, but failed due to Funk or a defensive leg.
Groenning prevented the guests from getting three important points in the fight to stay in the league – after a corner, of course. The “lucky punch” for the FCI, which is still stuck in no man’s land in the table.
