Speed skating is a racing sport carried out on ice with skates as a tool. It refers to a skating competition for speed skating within a specified distance, referred to as speed skating, which is the official event of the Winter Olympics.
The origin of speed skating
First appeared in the eleventh and twelfth centuries
Speed skating is a sport with a long history. As early as the eleventh and twelfth centuries, there are early documents in the Netherlands, Britain, Switzerland and some countries in Scandinavia about tying animal bones to the feet. The record of fast movement on ice, this is the early prototype of skating. Beginning in the 1840s, speed skating quickly spread from England and the Netherlands to other countries, and skating clubs were established.
In 1763, Britain held the 15km speed skating for the first time. In 1889, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the World Speed Skating Championship was held for the first time, and 13 countries including Norway and the Netherlands participated. In the 1870s, some countries’ requirements for establishing national skating organizations began to emerge. In 1892, the International Skating Union was established in the Netherlands. In January 1893, under the leadership of the International Skating Federation, the first World Men’s Speed Skating Championship was held in Amsterdam. It wasn’t until 1936 that there was the first World Women’s Speed Skating Championship.

Listed as an official competition in 1924
At the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, speed skating was listed as an official event. At that time, only four small events for men from 500 meters to 10,000 meters were established. Since the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics in the United States, women’s events have been established.
In the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada, the men’s and women’s speed skating events were increased to five. In the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, the men’s and women’s team pursuits were also listed as official speed skating events. In the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the men’s and women’s collective start competitions also entered the list of official competitions.

Chinese speed skating generations strive to achieve a breakthrough in Sochi
Speed skating is one of the first winter sports in China to rank among the top in the world. In 1959, in the 53rd Men’s Speed Skating World Championships, Yang Jucheng won the silver medal in the men’s 500m competition.
In 1963, at the World Speed Skating Championships held in Karuizawa, Nagano, Japan, Wang Jinyu broke the men’s all-around world record. At the same time, at this World Championships, 21-year-old Luo Zhihuan won the men’s 1500m championship and became the first Chinese athlete to win the world championship in winter events, ushering in a new era of winter sports in China.
The 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, the United States, was also the first Winter Olympics in which New China participated. The Chinese speed skating team also came to Lake Placid but failed to win a medal. It was not until the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, that Chinese players achieved a breakthrough in medals for the first time. At the age of 28, Ye Qiaobo won the silver medal in the women’s 500-meter speed skating final at the Albertville Winter Olympics. A medal. By the end of the 1993 spring tournament, Ye Qiaobo had won 14 world championships and created a “Grand Slam” record. In 1994, Ye Qiaobo retired due to injury after winning the bronze medal in the women’s 1000m speed skating at the 17th Lillehammer Winter Olympics. After 20 years, the Chinese speed skating team ushered in a change from silver medal to gold medal, and the quality of the medals. Several generations of speed skaters have made extremely hard work for this.
From 1994 to 2014, outstanding athletes such as Wang Manli and Wang Beixing emerged. In January 2008, the 20-year-old Zhang Hong changed his career from a short track speed skater to a speed skater, and his results have improved by leaps and bounds. In January 2012, Zhang Hong won the women’s sprint all-around champion of speed skating at the 12th National Winter Games; on December 16 of the same year, she won the second champion of the women’s 1000 meters speed skating World Cup Harbin Station; on December 30, Zhang Hong won the women’s 1000-meter speed skating championship at the Asian Championships. On February 13, 2014, Chinese speed skating ushered in a day of making history. Zhang Hong won the women’s 1000m speed skating championship at the Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia and won the first gold in the history of China’s speed skating Winter Olympics. Currently, Zhang Hong is an executive member of the Chinese Olympic Committee and a member of the Athletes Committee of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee.
