Cup winners Bayern Munich made a mistake in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) and lost the league lead, at least temporarily, to the Niners Chemnitz.
Despite a strong lead against Rasta Vechta, the Munich team suffered their fourth defeat of the season and surprisingly lost 88:90 (80:80, 56:40) after extra time. Vechta fought his way back into the game through a furious final quarter and crowned his strong comeback.
Bayern around Carsen Edwards (18 points) already looked like the sure winner thanks to their clear lead at halftime, but in the last part of the game the favorites completely lost the thread. Vechta with top scorer Chavares Flanigan (17) went on a 19:3 run at the start of the quarter and took the lead. But Munich recovered and escaped into extra time, in which the guests retained the upper hand.
Vechta underlined its play-off ambitions with the victory, took fifth place and kept pursuers Telekom Baskets Bonn at a distance. The runner-up lost to bottom team Heidelberg 87:92 (40:49). Chemnitz had already fulfilled its duty against bottom-placed Hakro Merlins Crailsheim on Saturday with 97:82 (42:39).
