On April 6, 2013, FC Bayern became German champions for the 23rd time and have sat on the German football throne since that date. After 4,026 days and eleven titles in a row, this is now over – Bayer Leverkusen are champions for the first time.
Coach Xabi Alonso’s team, which is still undefeated this season, won 5-0 (1-0) against Werder Bremen on Sunday after another gala and can no longer be pushed out of first place.
Victor Boniface scored the opening goal with a penalty kick in the 25th minute, Granit Xhaka (60th) and Florian Wirtz with a hat trick (68th/83rd/90th) increased the score after the break.
For Bayer, it is the first title in 31 years and the third overall after winning the UEFA Cup in 1988 and the DFB Cup in 1993. Leverkusen have remained unbeaten in all 43 competitive games of the season so far. The Rhinelanders are also in the DFB Cup final against second division team 1. FC Kaiserslautern on May 25th. Leverkusen is also still well represented in the Europa League after winning 2-0 in the quarter-final first leg against West Ham United.
