Fifteen years old, a student from Olevano sul Tusciano, two times champion of Italy Schoolboys and winner in the 52 kg (unfortunately, by now, we go by weight and no longer by categories) of the last international tournament “Alberto Mura” in Roseto degli Abruzzi, Gaetano Buonocore he leaves today for Georgia where the European Junior Championships will take place in the Tbilisi ring until 12 July.
Gaetano, it is good to write it immediately, he is a very promising talent of Salerno boxing and if his teacher Fioravante Lime he will continue to dedicate himself to him as he has done until today, the future can only be bright. 1.76 tall, in physical and mental growth, he has an excellent quality and very spontaneous boxing with natural strokes and feints, which can be completed with the gym and with maturity. He is a champion and, if he is lucky and willing to sacrifice himself, we will find him more and more at the top of the national youth movement. We’ll see. Master Calce puts both hands on the fire on the seriousness and enthusiasm of the boy.
What is certain is that the results obtained from 2019 to today are relevant. Fourteen matches and one defeat. “But the judges caught a crab that evening,” says the athlete from Olevano sul Tusciano. “I had won, then the filth no longer occurred because I understood that in the ring you have to stay ahead of your opponent from the first to the last shot”. A fifteen year old theory that makes it easy, but of course boxing wants his study breaks. He will learn this too.
Gaetano went very fast in the training camp of the junior national team in Formia. He underwent hard and exhausting workouts, met and passed strong competitors animated by his own ambition and, in the end, he gained the pass of 52 kilos, the weight most suited to his physical-mental structure. They wanted to take him to Tbilisi like 50 kilos, but he would have to make considerable sacrifices to get back to a weight that is no longer his. He was sulking, but in the end he and Maestro Calce were right.
“I’m sure that if everything goes smoothly, a medal will bring it to Olevano,” confides Calce. «I saw him fight in Latina in the last test match and he didn’t give up even one of the three rounds played. He is fit and confident. In the last few days he has been sparring in Battipaglia, in San Valentino Torio and in Torre Annunziata where his friends Ceglia, Throne e Zurlo, very important masters, have expressed themselves positively about him. It won’t be easy in Georgia. It is a very high level tournament, but if Gaetano faces it with the right spirit and attitude, the ring cannot blame his boxing. In any case, it will be a great experience for him because he will face boxers from major schools for the first time and will have the measure of his abilities ».
A detail that goes back to the boy. While committed to winning the “Mura” and, in the last month, to respond to the calls of the technicians of the Junior National team and concentrate on the European title, he crowned the school year with a well-deserved promotion. «I like school because, like the ring, it is a teacher of life. Now, however, I will have to give my best to the Europeans for my father, my mother, my sisters, those who support me and Maestro Calce. I am going to Tbilisi so as not to disappoint them. In any case they will have to be proud of me ». A boy like that deserves to go far. Beyond Georgia.
