Champions, because Amazon raises the bar for football on TV

by admin

Many on social media have renamed it “the lesson” of Amazon. Strict. That it rains between the head and neck of a Dazn – but also of Mediaset with its Infinity platform – forced from the beginning of the championship to raise the defenses due to problems in the use of the matches. Localized or not – and more or less widespread – the difficulties that result in the infamous wheels on the screens after three days (we are preparing for the fourth) are less and less tolerated and on social networks they end up passing in the blink of an eye from avalanches on blackboards.

Amazon does not cue the former

No cue instead for Amazon at its “first”, in a historic debut for football on TV in Italy. For the first time, in fact, the Champions League will have absolutely exclusive matches on streaming. For the whole of the next three years, Uefa has in fact assigned (the unconfirmed rumors indicate that all this happened for a figure of around 80 million euros per season) the exclusivity of the 16 best matches on Wednesday (in addition to the Uefa Super Cup final) to Amazon. All this will require a subscription to Amazon Prime (36 euros per year or 3.99 euros per month) which provides, as stated on the site, “unlimited deliveries in one day on 2 million products and in 2-3 days on many millions more »as well as the Amazon Prime Video video on demand service. It started with Inter-Real Madrid. It will continue on 29 September (again at 9 pm) with Juventus-Chelsea and on 20 October with Zenit-Juventus.

No 4K (but excellent 1080 @ 50Hz)

From a technical point of view, as explained by the specialized website D-Day, the Seattle giant did not take the risk of 4K HDR for compatible TVs, as instead announced, but “in return, it fell back on an excellent 1080 at 50 Hz. with 10 Mbps of bandwidth, obviously compressed in HEVC ». After all, it must be said that Amazon in this challenge can put on the plate all its know-how as a tech company that has its strong point in its cloud platform Aws. And the experience gained in the American NFL (with Thursday Night Football matches) is obviously not an insignificant variable. After all, the presence of Amazon as a player for the transmission of sporting events is now well established. In December 2019, it secured the rights in Germany for 16 Champions League matches per season for three seasons starting in 2021/22. In June 2018 he obtained the rights to 20 English Premier League football matches per season for three years starting in 2019/20.

A very strong team

What is certain is that Amazon did not hold back in the challenge, first of all taking on the burden of the exclusive broadcast of one match a week (and this means that the fan’s arrows would be amplified by the impossibility of seeing it anywhere else except in the public places where Sky and Amazon reached an agreement in August). A burden also accompanied by the commitment to building a team which includes the dean of sports commentators, Sandro Piccinini, after a life spent in Mediaset, with Massimo Ambrosini at his side; an exceptional sideline like Alessandro Alciato, freshly separated from Sky and, to stay at the Inter-Real Madrid match, three expert commentators including two protagonists of the treble (Diego Milito and Julio Cesar) plus Clarence Seedorf.

Pressing su Dazn

It must be said, always looking at the social “barometer” that there is no lack of those who have turned up their noses. There are those who have pointed the finger at Piccinini’s absence from the commentary for some time, for example. It should also be said that Amazon in entertainment has become accustomed to product and language innovations (read Lol) that set the bar of expectations very high. What is certain is that the day after Amazon’s debut in the Champions League, the focus is not on maintaining the network (on which, however, Agcom president Giacomo Lasorella and CEO Tim Luigi Gubitosi during an event of Myntelligence, a technology company that provides companies with platforms of advertising, they have reassured) or of Cdn and network infrastructures. And at this point the next championship day for Dazn becomes an even more important exam. With fans, Agcom, Parliament (the Tlc Commission of the House has announced a resolution) to watch. And, above all, not inclined to let even the slightest slip through.
