For Paris St. Germain and Kylian Mbappé, only the Champions League counts, national titles are bycatch. But once again the very rich club fails in the premier class. For the superstar, it was probably the last Champions League game in the Parisian jersey.
Immediately after the final whistle, Kylian Mbappé congratulated the BVB players on reaching the final of the Champions League. The Paris St. Germain superstar then hugged Dortmund coach Edin Terzic before walking across the pitch as if by remote control to thank the fans for their support. His appearance after the 0-1 defeat against BVB, which sealed PSG’s elimination from the Champions League, seemed like a farewell round.
When Mbappé moved from Monaco to PSG in 2018, it was also a promise of winning the Champions League. But the superstar also failed in his seventh attempt with the club, which has received over a billion euros from Qatar since 2011. The closest Mbappé and his teammates came to winning the premier class was in 2020. But back then, the French lost the final 0-1 against FC Bayern Munich.

The Champions League is what counts for the club bosses, championships and national cup victories are more of a bycatch. Mbappé won six championship titles and three cup victories with PSG, but the 25-year-old was denied the crowning glory in the Champions League. Also because he wasn’t able to show off his top class in both semi-final games against BVB.

“We hit the post six times, had 31 shots on goal, but didn’t score. It’s actually impossible to believe that. But that’s football, congratulations to BVB,” said PSG coach Luis Enrique.
