April 6th is the day of “Sport for Development and Peace”. The United Nations decided this. April 6th is a special day for sports. On April 6th, the Olympic Games as we know them took place for the first time. That was in 1896.

Athletes from all over the world take part in the Olympic Games. They play sports together even when their countries are at war. That’s why sport is good for peace.

People with disabilities also do sports. After the Olympic Games there are the Paralympics for people with disabilities. Athletes from all over the world take part.

The United Nations says: People should get to know each other through sport. And: All countries should promote sport. For example, the states should build sports fields.
