There are 16 million tons of fresh food arriving on Tuscan tables every year, divided between agricultural, food, fishing and aquaculture products, while 60,000 tons of frozen foods are consumed every year in the region (ISTAT data 2019 and 2021, the latest available) .

The data were presented on the occasion of the Florentine stage of Frigo’N’Motion, the “tour of Italy” dedicated to temperature-controlled transport, which is a guarantee of safety in the area. The Tuscan edition of Frigo’N’Motion, scheduled today starting from 3 pm at the Hotel 500 in Campi Bisenzio, is organized by OITAF – Interdisciplinary Food and Drug Observatory – in partnership with Toscandia SpA, the industrial vehicle dealership and commercial companies which has been operating for 50 years in Tuscany, Umbria and Sardinia, and which a few years ago launched “Tempo Zero”, the innovative project to support companies facing the energy transition process.

Transporting food to the tables of Italians is the fleet of temperature-controlled vehicles, of which OITAF has photographed the state of the art, collecting and analyzing the data from the Civil Motorization, divided by region, in the ATP Transport White Book.

In Tuscany there are 6,650 temperature-controlled vehicles, of which 31% are registered in the province of Florence: within this vehicle fleet, 2/3 are LCVs (light commercial vehicles), the others are M-HCVs ( medium and large commercial vehicles).

In this scenario, Tuscany emerges as one of the most virtuous regions in Italy, second only to Trentino Alto Adige. 48% of LCVs and 59% of M-HCVs are in fact classified Euro 5 and Euro 6, against a national average of 40% for LCVs and 50% for M-HCVs: over 50% of vehicles circulating in Tuscany were registered after 2009 and are equipped with new technologies for the treatment of exhaust gases, thus increasing safety and reducing the amount of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere.

The temperature-controlled towed vehicles registered in the region are 542, of which 478 semi-trailers and 64 trailers. 42% are registered in the province of Florence. Even in the case of towed vehicles, Tuscany confirms the strongly positive figure compared to the national average. The average age of the towed fleet is in fact 12 years, compared to the average of 16.4 at a national level: these are the youngest ATP tractors compared to the total number of vehicles circulating in the region.

Today is an entire afternoon of discussion on the scenario of temperature-controlled transport in Italy and Europe, in light of technological innovations and sustainability needs. A delicate issue for this territory was also addressed, namely the transport of wine and oil, products representative of Made in Italy and which to date are not subject to the obligation of controlled temperature transport.
