The Pinguins Bremerhaven success story in the German Ice Hockey League continues. The team wins the first final game against the Eisbären Berlin and is only three wins away from the championship.
The Eisbären Berlin started the final of the German Ice Hockey League (DEL) with a defeat. On Wednesday evening, the capital city team lost 2:4 (2:2, 0:2, 0:0) to the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven after a 2-0 lead and are now 0 in the best-of-seven series: 1 at the back. Early goals from Zach Boychuk and Leonhard Pföderl were not enough for the nine-time champions.
In front of 4,639 spectators in the Bremerhaven ice arena, the guests got off to a lightning start. Boychuk scored after 43 seconds. A little later, the Berliners were able to celebrate again: Pföderl increased the score to 2-0. Shortly afterwards, Tobias Eder had a great opportunity to extend the lead, but only hit the post.

Polar bears miss even the best opportunities
The encounter then remained turbulent and fast-paced. Both teams missed a few clear chances before Miha Verlic gave the North Germans their first lead in the middle of the second third. Thanks to a goal from Alexander Friesen, the home team was even able to pull away to 4-2.
In the final section, the capital increased the pressure, but were repeatedly denied by the strong Bremerhaven goalkeeper Kristers Gudlevskis. So they were no longer able to turn the game around.
The second game of the final series, which will be played in best of seven mode, will take place next Friday in Berlin. With Bremerhaven and the Eisbären, the two best teams from the preliminary round will meet in the final. The team from the North Sea sensationally took first place ahead of the Eisbären after 52 games.
