Mexico City, June 6, 2021 – The last to fall of thirty-five candidates for mayor, Friday night, it was to Cazones de Herrera, 25 thousand inhabitants in the state of Veracruz, among the most violent in the country. They killed him at home with rifle shots, without mercy, while before him, on May 25, his colleague Alma Barragan in Moroleon in Guanajuato she had been shot down during a rally. The latest victim was called René Tovar and with his Citizens’ Movement he wanted to succeed Zenon Pacheco Vergel, of the National Action Party, one of the forces that have allied themselves to oppose the president’s group Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador Morena, which tomorrow, in the count of these legislative and administrative elections, which are the most numerous and expensive in history, should see the absolute majority of the 500 deputies of the lower house of Parliament reconfirmed (currently it has 258), but without the two-thirds that they would make it possible to govern in practice without opposition.
You also vote for fifteen of the thirty-two governors, for thirty of the thirty-two state councils and for thousands and thousands of mayors. Elections that for the Estados Unidos Mexicanos arrive in the middle of the six years of the presidential term (and therefore of government) of the left populist Amlo, as they all call Obrador using his initials (the Mexican Constitution dated 1824 is borrowed from the American one which provides for midterm elections); the call to the polls makes it a real referendum on its elevation popularity stood at 57% from the peak of 63.
In 2018 Amlo was elected with 30 million votes, 53% of those who showed up at the polls. In these elections, those entitled to vote are 93 and a half million, the candidates more than 20 thousand. It will be necessary to see how many will go to the polls and how many will discourage the violence that is shaking Mexico without end. Numerous have already withdrawn local candidates who have been threatened. The groups of drug traffickers or common criminals they have already massacred politicians: at least 95 those killed in the past six months, 35 of which showed up for the office of statutory auditor. The analysts’ explanation is that the approximately two hundred bloodiest gangs that divide the country no longer consider it useful to aim at national level personalities as in the past, but prefer threaten the little ones to then have the territory available for their trades: drugs, smuggling, illegal immigration. Among other things, the executions do not seem to have a political flag: they end up under snipers left and right men and women.
Obrador blames the situation on the presidents who preceded him. Mexico travels at a rate of growth of 3%, less than that promised by the head of state, apart from the pandemic that has created a very high percentage of deaths and has not stopped the murders, three hundred thousand in fifteen years. “The crux of the matter is to know whether evil (or crime or crime as he wants to call it) is casual or causal”, wrote Roberto Bolano in ‘The Savage Detectives’ speaking of Mexico. In these cases there is no doubt.
