Lightning of Gasly with the AlphaTauri in the last free practice of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The French driver stopped the clock at 1’42”251. In second place went Perez with Red Bull (1’42 ” 595) to confirm the goodness of the Honda engine that drives the two teams. At the end of a troubled session for Mercedes, Hamilton managed to get the third time in the final (1’42”697), while his teammate Bottas never found an acceptable set-up and closed free practice at 13 Place (1’43”745). Worse goes to Verstappen, 15th in 1’43 ” 984: the World Championship leader crashed and missed most of the session, but will be able to take part in qualifying without any problems.
The Ferraris confirm a constant improvement which, in the absence of counter-tests, means overtaking the McLaren in the challenge for third place behind the impregnable Red Bull and Mercedes. Leclerc got the fourth position in 1’42”778, Sainz the fifth (1’43”006).
