Football mourns Mario Barluzzi. He won the Champions League with Milan

The Belluno goalkeeper played with Belluno from 1950 to 1954, before starting a great career. He lived in Varese with his wife Franca. In Rocco’s Rossoneri he was Giorgio Ghezzi’s deputy

Belluno football mourns Dario Giuliano Mario Barluzzi, better known as Mario Barluzzi. In Varese, where he lived with his family, the goalkeeper born in Belluno and raised in the yellow-blue nursery was missing before moving to Treviso and starting a brilliant career from there.

The apex of his career undoubtedly remains the conquest of the 1962-1963 Champions Cup with the Milan shirt, as assistant to Giorgio Ghezzi and led on the bench by the unforgettable “Paròn” Nereo Rocco. As a substitute, he instead played against Santos in the play-off of the Intercontinental Cup final in November 1963, played in Rio de Janeiro.

Barluzzi had turned 86 on 6 September and left his wife Franca, his children Stefano with Francesca and Andrea with Manuela, his nephews Cristian, Alessandro, Davide and Matteo. The funeral will be held in Varese on Monday.

OVER 100 ATTENDANCE

A brilliant career his, considering the more than 90 appearances in A and 11 in B, without forgetting the years of C and the Italian Cup. As mentioned, he had started playing in the goalposts of Belluno, moving to Treviso in 1954. There was the definitive consecration that allowed him to land in Catania in Serie A and then in Milan.

Curiously, he never wins the Scudetto in the Rossoneri, as he arrives after the 1962 tricolor and leaves just before the 1968 title. -1967. And without that doubtful penalty against in the 1963 Intercontinental play-off, perhaps he would have been crowned World Club Champion playing.

Among other things, he disputes a couple of seasons as a starter in Serie A with the Rossoneri, then changes side of the Naviglio and goes to Inter, even if with the Nerazzurri he only takes the field in the Italian Cup. At the time, among other things, the news of the transfer caused a sensation, as it was not usual to see a footballer go from one city rival to another. Barluzzi then ends his career between Mantua and Varese, where he had already established himself and helps the red and white to return to the top flight.

Finally, in Varese he also went on the bench twice, taking over from Eugenio Fascetti in the 1982-1983 season finale. Monza also saw him protagonist in the role of assistant coach.

Giancarlo Zampieri, one of the well-known faces of the Belluno Veterans and Barluzzi’s cousin, remembers it gladly.

“Once we even faced each other on the pitch, even though I’m a few years younger than him,” he underlines. «I was at Triestina and he at Treviso, in a match between reserves. Until recently, he was happy to visit relatives who live here. With his shy and humble character, he was able to take away some great football satisfactions ».
