Van der Sar in stable condition after cerebral hemorrhage

Goalkeeper legend Edwin van der Sar is in intensive care after a brain hemorrhage. However, the 52-year-old Dutchman is in a stable condition, said van der Sars longtime club Ajax Amsterdam.

Edwin van der Sar had just quit his stressful job and wanted to relax. The Dutch goalkeeper legend suffered a brain hemorrhage while on holiday and is in intensive care. His wife is now turning to the public.

Edwin van der Sar (52) is doing better again. The former Dutch national goalkeeper is no longer in mortal danger after suffering a brain haemorrhage. Last week, while on holiday in Croatia, he was taken to a hospital in Split by rescue helicopter. Doctors determined the cause was a cerebral hemorrhage.

His wife Annemarie van der Sar has now made a statement to the public. In a statement shared by Ajax Amsterdam, she said: “Edwin is still in intensive care but stable. Every time we visit him he is communicative. We’ll have to wait patiently to see how his situation develops.”

A cerebral hemorrhage occurs when a blood vessel in the skull tears, bursts, or is injured. Brain tissue can be injured as a result of the bruising or the resulting circulatory disorders. In the worst case, there can be life-threatening consequences. Therefore, a cerebral hemorrhage is always an emergency and should be treated immediately and as quickly as possible.

Van der Sar worked at Ajax for eleven years

The goalkeeper played 605 competitive games in his career for Ajax, Juventus Turin, Fulham FC and Manchester United. He was in goal 130 times for the Dutch national team. After the end of his playing career, he started out as a marketing director at Ajax in November 2012 and rose to the sporting board three years later. At the end of 2016 he took over the job as managing director. But after almost eleven years, the club and the club legend separated this summer.

In a statement from the club on May 30, van der Sar said: “After almost eleven years in management, I am empty. We did a lot of good things, but it was also an incredibly difficult period.” Although he was celebrated by the fans as an active player and at the beginning of his official career, the supporters were increasingly demanding that he be kicked out. Ajax only finished third last season – it was the club’s first untitled season since 2018.
