An Electric Car Makes History by Winning the Dakar Rally Championship for the First Time

In a historic victory, 62-year-old Spanish veteran driver, Sainz, claimed the overall championship in the car category at the 2024 Dakar Rally driving the Audi RS Q E-TRON E2. This marks the fourth time Sainz has been crowned the Dakar car category champion and the first championship for the Audi team. What makes this win even more remarkable is that it is the first time in the history of the Dakar Rally that an electric racing car has won the car category championship.

Sainz, who previously won the Dakar championship in 2010, 2018, and 2020, secured his fourth title representing the Audi team, and the Audi RS Q E-TRON E2 became the first electric racing car to win the Dakar championship.

In the motorcycle category, American rider Ricky Brabec of the Honda Team clinched the overall championship.

The 2024 Dakar Rally saw a total of 778 athletes and 434 racing cars participating in the event, which took place in Saudi Arabia with a total length of 7,891 kilometers. Unlike other rallies, the Dakar Rally’s tracks are known to be more primitive and dangerous, resulting in more fatal accidents than other racing events.

This groundbreaking win by the electric racing car marks a significant milestone in the world of motorsports. With the increasing focus on sustainable and eco-friendly practices, the triumph of the Audi RS Q E-TRON E2 at the Dakar Rally is a testament to the advancements in electric vehicle technology and its capabilities in high-octane racing competitions.
