On 22 November 1969 Gigi Riva scored the final 3-0 against East Germany with a header, in a winning dive. A goal that remained historic in the decisive match to go to the World Cup and face Pelè’s Brazil. “I remember that goal, the emotion in my heart, the roar of the crowd, an indescribable joy…” the former striker said years later.

Riva – nicknamed ‘Rombo di Tuono’ – passed away on 22 January 2024after being hospitalized in Cagliari for an illness that struck him while he was at home.
