Important points in the promotion race: 3rd league – Saarbrücken wins catch-up game against Unterhaching

The English week couldn’t have gone better for 1. FC Saarbrücken so far – the FCS also won the game against SpVgg Unterhaching on Wednesday.

FCS coach Rüdiger Ziehl used the same starting lineup for the catch-up game against SpVgg Unterhaching on Wednesday evening in Ludwigspark at home as in the 3-1 win in Dresden. A decision that should count in the end.

The initial phase, however, was characterized by careful testing by both teams. The FCS couldn’t find any means against the guests, who were deep and compact, and there were initially no significant chances to score on either side – then the goal came out of nowhere in the 25th minute. A cross from Markus Schwabl into the penalty area was met by Mathias Fetsch, who headed into the bottom left corner to give the visitors the lead.

In the 32nd minute, Tim Civeja brought things back to balance. Midfielder Luca Kerber passed it to Civeja in the penalty area, who sank the ball to make it 1-1. The FCS then stayed on the trigger and pushed for the opening goal, but failed to take advantage of their opportunities. With the score 1-1, both teams finally went into the locker room.

Quick lead in the second half

The FCS got off to a dream start in the second half: just three minutes after kick-off, Kerber headed the FCS into the lead after a cross from Civeja. The blue-blacks continued to put the Hachingers under pressure even after the 2-1 win and worked on an early decision, but had no luck.

As the game progressed, the strength of the Saarbrücken team, who still seemed to have the DFB Cup semi-final and the game against Dresden in their bones, increasingly weakened – which the Haching team tried to take advantage of. With a stable defensive performance, the hosts ultimately fought their way over time and with the 2-1 win they took three important points in the promotion race.

The FCS has its next home game against SV Sandhausen next Saturday – kick-off in the Ludwigsparkstadion is at 4.30 p.m.
