Injured and arrested after shooting at football match near Athens

Two people were injured during a West Athens Amateur League football match in Greece on Sunday. Unidentified people also fired several shots outside the stadium. As a police spokesman said on Greek radio, a total of ten people were arrested near the soccer field in the suburb of Aspropyrgos and a weapon was seized.

It initially remained unclear what injuries the two fans suffered and how serious they were. The violence broke out in the 43rd minute of the game between Apollon Pontion and Mandraikos.

Hooligans and gangs

In the Aspropyrgos region in the west of Athens, there are repeated riots and shootings between rival gangs that, among other things, are involved in drug trafficking. The police see connections between hooligans and these gangs.

Greek football has been rocked by riots for years, even in the higher leagues. Due to riots, the government ordered that all Superliga games take place without spectators from mid-December to mid-February. Since February 14th, fans have been able to go to the stadiums again, subject to certain conditions.
