Marlon Colpaert conquers silver in the light single scull at the European Rowing Championships

Marlon Colpaert became vice European champion in the light skiff in Szeged, Hungary on Sunday. The 24-year-old Ostend resident was only beaten by the Italian Niels Torre in the A-final at the European Championships. He finally beat Frenchman Baptiste Savaete for silver.

Colpaert is the reserve for the Belgian duo in the light double sculls Tibo Vyvey and Niels Van Zandweghe. Earlier on Sunday, they won a ticket for the Olympic Games in Paris in the European qualifying regatta in Szeged.

The three other Belgian boats at the European Championships completed the B finals on Sunday. Skiffeur Gaston Mercier finished fourth in his race, good for tenth place (out of nineteen participants) in the final score. The double sculls Tristan Vandenbussche and Aaron Andries won his B final and finished seventh. Vandenbussche and Andries are still aiming for a ticket for the Olympic Games during the last chance qualifying regatta next month in Lucerne, Switzerland (May 19-21). Two more tickets for Paris will be distributed per category.

Mazarine Guilbert is also going for an Olympic participation certificate in Lucerne. Guilbert came second in the B final on Sunday, good for eighth place (out of nine participants) in the final standings.
