Matthieu Bonne (30) has to abandon his world record attempt.

Merelbeke –

Ultra athlete Matthieu Bonne (30) stopped his world record attempt on Friday. On the slopes in Merelbeke he wanted to complete 1,038 kilometers in six days, but the heavy gusts of wind played tricks on him.

“After an uneven battle of more than 24 hours with the heavy gusts of wind, Matthieu decided this morning around 7.50 am to give up his world record attempt. The team decided to have Matthieu do a short medical check-up in the hospital,” it said.

After a world record for non-stop swimming and cycling, ultra athlete Matthieu Bonne (30) is working on a new running record. In six days, the West Flemish wanted to complete 1,038 kilometers on the running track in Merelbeke. In other words: four marathons of 42 km per day, a great stunt.

Bonne was on track to break the world record on Thursday. “He experienced mild hallucinations, especially at night, but is generally still very lucid and the team is managing to consult with him about planning and care,” he said.

But the heavy gusts of wind eventually played tricks on Bonne on Thursday night and the attempt had to be abandoned. “An update will follow if there is more news and if and when Matthieu will continue his race. In the meantime, Ludo and Kenneth are continuing strongly,” it sounds.
