American ski star Mikaela Shiffrin won the slalom in Flachau, Austria, on Tuesday evening. It is her 94th World Cup victory, the 57th in a slalom.
Shiffrin won after two runs in 1’49”35 ahead of the Slovak Olympic champion Petra Vlhova, second at 27 hundredths. Vlhova was the first after the first run, with a seven-hundredth lead over Shiffrin.
Sweden’s Sara Hector completed the podium at 1’11”.
The 28-year-old Shiffrin, a former Olympic and four-time world champion in the slalom, recorded her sixth victory of this winter on Tuesday. Last season she already improved the record of 86 World Cup victories of Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark.
The American immediately strengthened her leading positions in the Slalom World Cup and the overall World Cup. Vlhova also follows in second place. In the slalom, Shiffrin leads with 530 points, 25 more than Vlhova. In the overall World Cup, Shiffrin has a wider margin (1,029 to 802).
A few days ago, Shiffrin’s partner, the Norwegian star Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, had a serious fall in the descent of Wengen. After the finish, the American let her tears flow freely.
Kim Vanreusel finished 50th in the first run on Tuesday, 4.20 behind Vlhova. Only the top 30 advanced.
The World Cup continues next weekend with a giant slalom (Saturday) and slalom (Sunday) in Jasna, Slovakia.
