In a real extra time thriller, the Eisbären Berlin won the second playoff semi-final in the DEL against the Straubing Tigers. The encounter joins the list of the longest ice hockey games of all time.
The Eisbären Berlin won the second playoff semi-final game of the German Ice Hockey League at the Straubing Tigers in an ice hockey thriller shortly before midnight on Wednesday – in the third overtime. With 111 minutes playing time, it was the third longest match in DEL history.
Ty Ronning played a key role – even though he hardly managed anything in the regular playing time. With his long-range shot after almost two hours on the ice, the 26-year-old attacker forced the decision and became the hero of the night.

Iserlohn and Frankfurt as overtime experts
The Iserlohn Roosters and the Frankfurt Lions played the longest DEL game ever recorded on the night of March 20th to 21st, 2008. After the Sauerlanders gave up a 2-0 lead in the second playoff quarter-final game, they won 3-2 in extra time after almost 118 minutes with a goal from Michael Wolf. The Hessians ultimately won the epic playoff series with a total of three overtime games 4:3.
However, the minute record from the second game of the series only lasted for a very short time; the record was shattered two days later.
The German record is 168 minutes
It was the early hours of the morning on March 23, 2008, when the decision in the epoch-making match between the Kölner Haien and the Adler Mannheim was made after an incredible 168 minutes of play.
In the third game of the quarter-final series, Philip Gogulla managed to decide the game in favor of his Cologne team in the sixth (!) extra time. In the end it was 5:4 after more than six and a half hours of gross playing time. The Sharks would later advance to the final, where they ultimately had to admit defeat to the Eisbären.

The NHL record is a long time ago
The longest game in the North American professional league NHL lasted a few minutes longer. On March 24, 1938, the spectators not only had to wait for a winner, but also for the first goal in the game between the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Maroons for almost 177 minutes. For the Americans, Canadian-born Modere Fernand Brunetea scored the winning goal in the sixth overtime. For 89 years, this game was considered the longest ice hockey game in the world.
The longest game adds two more extensions
On March 12, 2017, this record was broken in Norway. Players and spectators had to wait eight extra periods before a decision was made between Storhamar Hockey and the Sparta Warriors. Shortly before the end of the eighth overtime, Joakim Jensen scored for Storhamar to make it 2-1 after just over 217 minutes – so the players fought a battle of nerves for more than three and a half hours, and that for a large part of the night.
