Second league football: The promotion of HSV is becoming a long way off

2nd Bundesliga defeat against Kiel

The rise of HSV is becoming a distant prospect

As of: 11:13 p.m. | Reading time: 2 minutes

HSV loses against Holstein Kiel and almost needs a miracle to achieve the promotion they long for. With four match days to go, Hamburg are already six points behind the relegation spot. Kiel, on the other hand, can almost plan for the Bundesliga.

Hamburger SV has suffered what could have been a decisive setback in the promotion race to the Second Bundesliga. On the other hand, table leader Holstein Kiel came a lot closer to making it into the Budesliga for the first time thanks to the 1-0 (0-0) win at HSV. In their sixth success in a row without conceding a goal, Tom Rothe (59th) scored the winning goal. After Lewis Holtby was sent off (73′), Holstein survived the final phase outnumbered.

With 61 points, Kiel are twelve points ahead of fourth-placed HSV (49 points) and have a clearly better goal difference four game days before the end of the season. They are almost certain of third place in the promotion relegation. The Hamburg team absolutely had to win in order to at least be able to hope for third place. The gap to Fortuna Düsseldorf is now six points.

In front of 57,000 spectators in the sold-out Volksparkstadion, Holstein Kiel started with the self-confidence of a league leader. After just over a minute, the ball flew against the post after a deflected shot from ex-HSVer Finn Porath.

HSV is too harmless on offense

Hamburg tried hard, but needed a few minutes to get into the game. The absence of their top scorer Laszlo Bénes due to injury was noticeable in some situations. Goal scorer Robert Glatzel was back on the field from the start. Apart from a shot from Levin Ötztunali, who unexpectedly made his way into the team, there were no major chances for HSV in the first quarter of an hour. But HSV got stronger and the game got better and better. There were chances on both sides, but clear opportunities were missing. The Kiel team were unlucky when the conspicuous Porath (24th) had to be substituted with a thigh injury.

After the break, the hosts became more and more superior and pushed Holstein onto the defensive. The Kiel team relied on the counterattack. With a double chance from Robert Glatzel and Jonas Meffert (53′), HSV was close to the lead. But the guests scored after a corner from Rothe, who came on for Porath (59′). The goal stood even after a VAR check. Things got exciting again after the yellow-red card for Holtby. But HSV couldn’t think of enough to equalize.
