Abbott has launched a new type of wearable sensor, the Lingo, in the UK. This device is designed to help users monitor their blood glucose levels in real time and develop healthier habits. Introduced at CES, the biowearable Lingo and its companion app offer personalized insights and personalized coaching to improve sleep, mood, focus, energy and food cravings.
Sarah Tan, European general manager of Abbott’s Lingo business, said biowearable gives “people the power to see inside their own body and take control of their health, and with real-time coaching, make changes sustainable.” The device, previewed in July to gather feedback from British users, is worn on the back of the upper arm for two weeks. Transmits data directly to the Lingo app on your smartphone via Bluetooth. Lingo uses algorithms and artificial intelligence to understand how diet, exercise and sleep affect an individual’s glucose levels. Based on the analysis, Lingo suggests actions users can take when their glucose levels fluctuate.
Olivier Ropars, vice president of the Lingo division, said the company has already spoken to the UK NHS about using the platform by clinicians and patients as part of preventative healthcare measures. However, he stressed that technology does not replace doctors. CEO Robert Ford said in October that the Lingo sensor could be released in the United States in 2024.
The Lingo continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is now available to purchase in the UK. Having made its public premiere in the country, the CGM is now accessible to all.
It is sold as a single sensor (£89) or in a pack of four (£300), allowing users to monitor increases and decreases in blood glucose.
Introduced at CES 2024 in Las Vegas, CGM Lingo is designed to help users develop healthier habits by offering personalized coaching and in-depth insights through the app, which focuses on ways to improve sleep, mood, concentration , hunger and energy.
Lily Soutter, Lingo nutritionist at Abbott, highlighted that mood, weight, energy levels and ability to concentrate are all linked to individual glucose levels, which vary in response to food, sleep, exercise and stress.
Lingo’s goal is to help people better manage glucose spikes and dips to improve health and well-being. Lingo is not advertised as a device for diabetics, but focuses on how glucose meters can help the average man.
It’s important to note that while Lingo isn’t the only device of its kind, the launch is significant given that Abbott makes sensors used by rival companies.
