The great event scheduled for 7 to 12 June was presented in the Capitol
The stars of great athletics are preparing to light up the sky of Rome. From 7 to 12 June the Olympic Stadium, the Foro Italico Park and the most iconic places in the city will be the setting for the Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships, officially presented today in the Aula Giulio Cesare in the Campidoglio.
The prestigious international sporting event, organized by the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation (participated by the Department for Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Lazio Region, Rome Capital, CONI, Sport and Health, FIDAL) and by European Athletics, returns to Italy in fifty minutes exactly years away from the last edition hosted in 1974, even then in the capital, and will precede the start of the athletics competitions at the Paris Olympic Games by fifty days.
In Rome the great athletics champions will perform for six consecutive days and will be the protagonists of a competition divided into 11 overall competition sessions and 24 different disciplines. There will be 141 medals up for grabs and, to date, almost 1600 athletes belonging to 47 European federations make up the preliminary list of registrations for the races, which will be completed by May 30th.
During the press conference the most important political-sports institutions spoke, including the Mayor of Rome Capital Roberto Gualtieri, the president of FIDAL and the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation Stefano Mei, the president of European Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov, the Head of the Department for the Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Flavio Siniscalchi, the president of CONI Giovanni Malagò, the president of the Italian Paralympic Committee Luca Pancalli, the president of Sport and Health Marco Mezzaroma, the councilor of Roma Capitale for Major Events, Sport, Tourism and Fashion Alessandro Onorato and the Lazio Region Councilor for the Environment, Sport, Climate Change, Energy Transition, Sustainability Elena Palazzo. A representation of athletes from the Italian national team also participated in the press conference, consisting of Antonella Palmisano, Massimo Stano, Mattia Furlani, Zaynab Dosso and Lorenzo Simonelli.
“Fifty years after Pietro Mennea’s extraordinary victory at the Olympic Stadium, in the 1974 edition, the city is ready to relive those emotions and write another memorable page of sport together with the rest of the country. They will be six exciting days for a major international event for which Rome will be the stage”, said the Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri.
“From Gianmarco Tamberi to Marcell Jacobs, all the best Italian athletes will be present. Italian athletics is experiencing an extraordinary moment, confirmed by recent results, for a total of 17 Italian records in 9 different specialties in the last three weeks. The European Championships in Rome 2024 will be an opportunity to show the growth of our movement and the springboard towards the Paris Olympics”, declared the president of FIDAL and the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation Stefano Mei.

“The European Championships in Rome, 50 years after the last edition hosted in our country, rewrite history and reward the international credibility of the Federation chaired by Stefano Mei, ideally celebrating the great results obtained by the entire movement in recent years, in the wake of sensational record obtained at the Tokyo 2020 Games”, highlighted CONI president Giovanni Malagò, who added: “The 2027 World Championships? We hope they arrive in our city.”
The President of the Italian Paralympic Committee Luca Pancalli underlined that “such a prestigious event brings to mind extraordinary pages of Italian sport. But the present of Italian athletics authorizes us to think big. A challenge within a challenge awaits us. Not only to confirm ourselves at high levels, but also to demonstrate that Rome and our country have what it takes to host major sporting events and transform them into opportunities for economic development and cultural and social growth.”

According to the Councilor of Rome Capital Alessandro Onorato “they will be the most beautiful European Championships of recent years. The matches will be played not only in a renovated Olympic Stadium and in the stupendous Stadio dei Marmi restored to its former glory but also in the most iconic places of the city in the shadow of the most evocative monuments. Rome confirms itself as the Capital of sport and major events, which are increasingly a fundamental driving force for tourism”.
“The European Athletics Championships represent a driving force for sports and tourism promotion, which is why the Lazio Region has given its support to the event. Meanwhile, athletics has already chosen the facilities in our region: Jacobs will be at the Guidobaldi in Rieti from May to prepare for the challenge and the public will be able to watch the training sessions.
