The Zoncolan was the most viewed stage of the Giro d’Italia on TV

Yates e Bernal sul Kaiser

In the middle of 3.5 they were glued to the TV for Fortunato’s solo. The Kaiser is in a row with all other transmissions. Grado also pierces the screen.

UDINE. At the numbers Zoncolan wins again. And what numbers. There are still those who say that the Kaiser does not make a difference in the standings, because it is too hard a climb, but the difference does, indeed, in the thing that matters most to having this mountain often on the Giro map: the numbers of the audience TV. And patron Enzo Cainero rejoices.

The arrival of the fourteenth stage on the Zoncolan, with the return from the Sutrio side after 18 years, was the most watched stage of the Giro 2021 on TV: the live broadcast on Rai 2 of the arrival obtained a share of 12.56%, then 12 out of 100 viewers were tuned in to Lorenzo Fortunato’s feat in the fog and Egan Bernal’s red jersey at the last kilometer, with 1,872,741 spectators.

The victory of Lorenzo Fortunato

In particular, the thrilling final of the stage showed a share of 23.46% and an audience of 3,066,720 spectators. The last km? Twenty-seven percent share with over 3.5 million audience members. A beautiful and good record also because, in 2018, Chris Froome’s solo on the Ovaro side at the end of the San Vito-Zoncolan was seen “only” by 2.8 million spectators, while, unattainable, it is the feat of Basso in the 2010 Giro with 4.5 million people in front of the TV, a record still unbeaten in the Giro.

But that’s not all: the “Process at the stage” with Alessandra De Stefano after Kaiser had a share of 13.07% and audience figures of 1,505,118 spectators: the most watched process of the entire pink race.

And the day after, the departure from Grado towards Gorizia, stage 15, perhaps also due to the disastrous fall of some riders immediately after the start which forced the race management to suspend the stage for half an hour, had a share of the 2.98%. Not bad for a Sunday at noon.
