Rome, 23 May 2022 – Almost 30 thousand Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine since the start of the war. On the eighty-eighth day of conflict, here is the update of the losses of the Moscow army. According to British intelligence, in the first three months of the war, Russia is facing similar numbers on soldiers killed to those recorded in the nine-year war in Afghanistan. London does not estimate dead soldiers, but evidence on the Twitter report that the “high death rate” is due to a number of factors, including an approach to command that reinforces failures in the field.

Russian deaths in Ukraine: the numbers

The Kiev army provides a precise number on Russia’s losses since the start of the war: 29,200 soldiers killed. After 88 days of conflict, 204 fighters, 170 helicopters and 476 drones have also been shot down. In addition, the Kiev forces claim to have destroyed 1,293 Russian tanks, 604 pieces of artillery, 3,166 armored vehicles for transporting troops, 110 cruise missiles, 201 rocket launchers, 13 ships, 2,206 vehicles and tankers for the transport of fuel, 93 anti-aircraft defense units and 43 special equipment units.

007 London: the comparison with Afghanistan

The number of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine to date is like those killed in Afghanistan during a 9-year war. Britain’s intelligence service on Twitter publishes a harsh report, a heavy toll on Vladimir Putin’s special military operation now nearly three months ago. London does not estimate dead soldiers, but evidence that the “high death rate” is due to a number of factors, including limited air coverage, a lack of flexibility and a command approach that reinforces failures and induces to repeat mistakes. And the losses, he points out, continue to increase in the Donbass offensive. This continuous increase in the number of deaths in the ranks of the army, the intelligence concludes, could lead to a growing dissatisfaction on the part of the Russian population, in addition to its willingness to express it in public.
