Zalf’s paw, when it counts, comes with impressive regularity. Still them, always them. The 29th Giro del Veneto (returned after a year’s stop) which ended yesterday in Falcade sanctioned the triumph of Zalf: the winner of the final success, at the end of a fifth and last difficult and daring stage, was the Vicenza Matteo Zurlo. The boy directed by Gianni Faresin, Ilario Contessa and Mauro Busato was good at resisting the forcing of his opponents on the ramps of Forcella Aurine and defending himself on the climb that led to the finish in Falcade. For him, the victories also came in the special points classification and in the flying finish line, as well as an extraordinary second stage place behind the Sicilian Francesco Romano. Riccardo Verza (he was the leader) also defended the second place in the standings, while Stefano Gandin confirmed himself as the leader of the climbers’ classification.
ZURLO in seventh heaven
«It was a challenging and hard fought Giro del Veneto but we are happy to have achieved the final success which, from the first day, was our main objective. The boys raced as a real team, taking advantage of every opportunity to accumulate advantage in the standings. It should not be forgotten that we also obtained a stage success with Alessio Portello in the stage that ended in Castelfranco Veneto. A balance, therefore, more than positive for all of us: I want to congratulate the whole team for having shown their maturity and for having managed a race that was not easy to interpret », underlined the sports director Gianni Faresin.
In seventh heaven, Matteo Zurlo: «We started this morning with Verza as leader but on the climb I was the only one left in front and I’m happy to be able to control the situation. This victory is a dream for me and I am very happy to have won it thanks to a fantastic team that ran all the stages flawlessly. I dedicate it to my teammates, to the sporting directors, to the patrons Gaspare Lucchetta and Egidio Fior and to all the people who love me and who have always supported me ».
TOUR OF THE MEDIUM BRENTA
The 35th edition of the Giro del Medio Brenta will start today at 12.45 from Villa del Conte. The international test set up with the usual passion by the Veloce Club Villa del Conte of president Michele Michielon, will see the professional team of Eolo Kometa in the race, among the 25 formations at the start. After the start, the caravan will face three initial rounds of 26 kilometers drawn between Santa Giustina in Colle, Marsango and Campo San Martino before heading towards the finish line on the Asiago plateau, in Gallio. It should be remembered that the race will inaugurate the 2021 edition of the International Walled City Grand Prix Trophy promoted again this year by the stainless steel Pierluigi Basso.
