Artificial intelligence can make school even more inclusive

To support the efforts of educational communities engaged in contexts of high vulnerability and fragilitythe Digital World Foundation, thanks to new funding from Google, is developing artificial intelligence solutions to guarantee the rights of all children and young people at school, as our Constitution asks of us.

It is a learning platform based on artificial intelligence, which includes among its features intelligent tutoring to support caregivers (teachers, support teachers, healthcare workers, social-health workers and parents) and children with specific learning disorders. learning (DSA), in their training path and for their growth, also guaranteeing safe online navigation.

Mirta Michilli, director of the Digital World Foundation

The partnership that governs the development of adaptive and customizable platform based on artificial intelligence involves the largest non-profit rehabilitation institute in Italy, the Don Gnocchi Foundationtechnical partners (ITLogiX), also linked to universities, such as Roma Trewhich follow the entire project process, from development to testing and operator training, up to adaptation for other countries, starting with Spain and Portugal.

We have built a partnership on strong and shared values, because we want the design effort to be an open system and remain a common heritage of the community, so that it can develop in new directions.

The platform has two service objectives: to support educators, teachers and caregivers and facilitate the learning path of children and young people with special needs. It can be enriched with new content and materials, such as games, tests, etc. But behind the project idea there is also a broader vision: experimenting with a learning model for facilitate full citizenship, including online, for all citizens.

The platform offers a facilitating, adaptive and customizable learning context that can help achieve the principle of maximum inclusion and the highest quality of education, as the emeritus professor and linguist Tullio De Mauro claimed: “The students all achieve excellent results in international comparison if the schools achieve maximum inclusion, that is, they lead 100 percent of the students to finish school. The more a school does not lose or drive away its pupils, including disabled ones, the more the learning results shine” (The Economist thinks again, International, n. 1158, 17 June 2016).

Attention to people in fragile conditions is included in the genetic code of the Digital World Foundationwhich over time has also dealt with aids for disabilities, interactive platforms to guarantee virtual presence in the classroom for students with long periods of long-term care in hospital and at home, and accessible games for different abilities.
