Epic Games Announces Apple Has Restored iOS Developer Account in EU

Epic Games announced that Apple has restored its iOS platform developer account in the EU, meaning that the Epic Games Store game market service previously announced for iOS devices in the EU will be launched smoothly.

With Apple reinstating the developer account, Epic Games will be able to put its games and software application services back on the App Store in the EU. The company recently revealed plans to provide its iOS devices for the European Union. The return of the Epic Games Store service will also bring the popular game “Fortnite” back to iOS devices, eliminating the need for users to play through streaming game services such as Xbox Game Pass or GeForce Now.

This move comes as Apple is required by the EU Digital Market Law to allow iOS device users to download apps through third-party software market services in the EU. As a result, Apple has agreed to allow developers and operators to submit applications to the EU within the EU. iOS devices provide third-party software market services, albeit with the same security standards as Apple.

However, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has criticized Apple for not intending to ease regulations on third-party software markets. He believes that Apple’s practices intentionally exploit developers, adding fees on installations that exceed 1 million and collecting fees from developers who use third-party payment services.

Despite these criticisms, a court ultimately ruled that Apple’s practices did not form a monopoly in the mobile game market.

In a statement, Epic Games also shared its annual game usage review for 2023, revealing a total of 270 million PC players on their services, with the number of monthly active users reaching 75 million in December. The Epic Games Store saw an increase in spending, with a total of over 950 million U.S. dollars spent on the platform. The company also provided a total of 86 free games last year, with a 75% satisfaction rate and over 596 million claimants.

The return of Epic Games to the iOS platform in the EU is anticipated to be well-received by its user base in the region, and marks a significant development for the company’s expanding market presence.
