Great popularity and numerous discussions – successful format stimulates thought!

The Plastics Initiative Bonn/Rhein-Sieg and the Plastics Competence Center of TROWISTA GmbH had invited people and the hall was filled to the last seat.

Bonn, March 20, 2024 “Three entertaining rounds of discussions, an interested audience, a lot of personal exchange and consistently positive feedback – we are absolutely satisfied,” begins Alexander Miller from the Plastics Competence Center of the Troisdorf economic development agency TROWISTA. The collaboration between the Plastics Initiative and the Plastics Competence Center could hardly have had a better start. “We started talking and got people thinking. In addition to current topics, we initiated many contacts in the region and achieved our goal,” adds Dr. Christine Lötters, on behalf of the Plastics Initiative.

The topics were chosen closely to the needs of the target group. The “energy supply of the future” is what concerns companies. Many are looking for sustainable solutions and are faced with major challenges. During the discussion it became clear that a successful transformation and expansion involves an enormous intervention in the existing infrastructure and a high economic effort. One of many solutions is hydrogen, but it is only suitable as a replacement for gas to a limited extent; price and availability are the decisive factors here.

“Circular economy – recognizing and using recyclable materials as resources” was also an important topic. A more in-depth discussion with the participation of the audience quickly revealed the limits of today’s waste management. Discussions sparked about how contemporary labeling still is and what political framework conditions need to be created in order to make the circular economy in Germany efficient. A consensus was that used materials must be treated with care because recycling is a must. There was also food for thought to act more as a society than as an individual. This includes sharing things that we rarely need, such as: B. Scarifiers and lawn mowers.

In order to close the circle, a round of discussions on the topic of “Modern plastics – functional and sustainable” could of course not be missed. It was about the material itself, especially its possibilities and limitations. Thanks to tailor-made recipes, plastic is a material with enormous potential and is now an integral part of our world. It was agreed that our lives could no longer be imagined without modern plastics, with packaging and medicine in mind. It was agreed that the recyclable materials must be returned to the cycle after use, if this is possible. There are clear restrictions in the healthcare sector when it comes to recycling used products.

There was no easy answer to the question of how young people can get excited about working with plastic. This can only be solved as a society, because in addition to the young people, their families and schools also have to be taken along. The clear message is that not all plastic is the same as plastic waste.

The event was moderated by Alexander Miller from the Plastics Competence Center and Dr. Christine Lötters – Plastics Initiative Bonn / Rhein-Sieg.

“Plastic – the material with perspectives” – this is the statement that launched the plastics initiative in the region. Together we want to educate, provide consumers in the region with correct data and facts and contribute to an appropriate discussion about plastic as a material. Using various fields of application, the aim is to show how important plastics are, especially in times of high hygiene requirements and CO2 reduction.
