HMD Launches New Pulse Series Mobile Phones at MWC 2024, Disappointment Ensues

At this year’s Mobile World Congress 2024, HMD made the exciting announcement that it would be launching new mobile phones under its own brand, along with a variety of new products. However, as information about the first wave of HMD-branded Pulse series mobile phones has started to surface, some have found themselves feeling more disappointed than impressed.

The upcoming HMD Pulse series is expected to include three products, with leaked specifications and appearance details recently revealed by whistleblower OnLeaks. The basic Pulse and Pulse Pro models appear nearly identical in both design and features, using China Unisoc’s T606 processor which offers slightly lower performance than the Qualcomm S660 and lacks 5G support.

Both the Pulse and Pulse Pro feature 6.56-inch HD+ IPS LCD screens with 90Hz refresh rates and hole-punch front cameras. The phones are equipped with 5,000mAh batteries and are expected to support basic 20W charging. Camera specifications seem to be the main differentiator between the two models, with the Pulse Pro offering a higher resolution main and front camera compared to the basic Pulse.

Despite the similarities in specifications to previous Nokia models, particularly the Nokia G22, the HMD Pulse Pro is rumored to have a starting price of 179 euros, around NT$6,200. This pricing strategy has raised concerns among consumers, as there are other options available in the market with better performance and value for money.

With HMD seemingly continuing Nokia’s poor pricing strategy, questions have been raised about the company’s ability to stand out in the competitive mobile phone market without the support and reputation of the Nokia brand. As the Pulse series prepares for its release, it remains to be seen whether HMD can generate the same level of excitement and interest among consumers.
