New iPhone Trojan Virus “Gold Digger” Targets Face ID and Bank Deposits of Asian Users
Concerns have been raised about the safety of iPhone devices after the discovery of a new Trojan virus called “Gold Digger” that specifically targets the Face ID intelligence and bank account information of Asian users. Group-IB, a network security company, first identified the presence of the virus in Asia and has since reported on its growing impact.
The Gold Digger virus was initially spotted in October last year and has since evolved to include variants that target victims’ bank deposits. It has been found to primarily affect Asian regions such as Vietnam and Thailand, with English and Traditional Chinese versions now being observed. Researchers warn that the virus could potentially spread to other regions as well. Hong Kong users in particular are advised to exercise caution.
What sets Gold Digger apart is its ability to circumvent the security measures of the iOS platform. Initially targeting Android devices, the virus has since developed a variant known as GoldPickaxe, which is designed to steal mobile phone users’ bank deposits and crack the iPhone/iPad’s Face ID intelligence. This means that the virus can forge facial recognition data and gain unauthorized access to victims’ bank accounts.
The methods used to infect iOS devices are particularly troubling. Hackers have exploited the beta version of the software test tool “TestFlight” to attract iPhone users into installing malicious apps. This presents a serious security risk as the beta software does not undergo the same review process as regular App Store apps, making it easier for criminals to implant the virus onto victims’ phones.
As a result of this discovery, iPhone users are being advised to take certain precautions to protect their devices. These include upgrading to the latest version of iOS, avoiding clicking on links from unknown sources, being cautious with logging in information on untrusted web pages, and refraining from installing mobile apps from unofficial platforms.
Additionally, iOS users are advised against installing the TestFlight Beta software and description file, as well as authorizing third-party apps to use Face ID intelligence. Finally, it is recommended that users create a separate Apple ID containing minimal personal information if they wish to experiment with potentially risky apps, and use independent mobile phone hardware.
The emergence of Gold Digger serves as a reminder that mobile phone security is a critical factor in today’s digital landscape. As technology continues to evolve, it is essential for users to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to safeguard their personal information and financial assets.
