Microsoft to Remove WordPad from Windows 11 in Latest Update
In a move that marks the end of an era, Microsoft has confirmed that the WordPad word processing editor function will be removed from the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 version update. WordPad, which has been a staple in the Windows operating system since Windows 95, has provided users with the ability to view and edit plain text and RTF files, offering more text formatting options than Notepad.
For nearly 30 years, WordPad has been a go-to tool for users looking to work on *.txt plain text documents and *.rft files. However, with Microsoft’s push towards Windows 365 and Office editing software, along with the availability of third-party software that can also open and edit Microsoft file formats, the need for WordPad has diminished.
As a result, in the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 version update set to be officially launched in the second half of this year, WordPad will be officially removed from the Windows operating system. Users are encouraged to open and edit their document files through services such as Windows 365 or continue to utilize Notepad for simple file content editing.
