No Windows 12 in 2024, but AI updates

Windows is set to get a major upgrade this year. However, this should not be Windows 12.

Microsoft is planning to release a major upgrade for the existing Windows versions this fall. This opens a support document, which was initially reported by Windows Latest. As a result, this should be the fall update called Windows 11 Version 24H2.

AI updates for Windows

As part of this update, Microsoft aims to establish Copilot as an AI everyday helper. This is intended to support users in a variety of ways, particularly through the integration of voice and text input. The aim is to simplify navigation through menus and settings and to make the use of computer applications more intuitive. According to Neowin, an update – “Moment-5” will probably come out in February or March, which will bring new functions and some improvements.

However, according to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the plan is for the Copilot to be integrated into the Windows systems from May onwards in order to be able to access OneDrive files. The files should then be able to be evaluated without having to open the files. The copilot should also be able to combine various files and content. The file formats that should be supported are DOC, DOCX, FLUID, LOOP, PPT, PPTX, XLSX, PDF, ODT, ODP, RTF, ASPX, RTF, TXT, HTM, and HTML.

Windows 10 remains

The majority of users remain on Windows 10. Around a billion people are part of the user base. While the user base of Windows 11 is around 400 million users. For Zac Bowden WindowsCentral it is therefore obvious that Microsoft will hold back on releasing Windows 12. After all, there is still the problem that Windows 11 is not accessible for older systems.

According to Bowden, Microsoft wants to continue to provide Windows 10 with new updates, including, for example, Copilot, which can now also be used under Windows 10. Windows 10 should therefore not phase out official support for this version until 2025.
