In a shocking move, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced plans to cut 900 jobs globally, affecting about 8% of the company’s total workforce. The layoffs will impact offices in regions including Japan, Asia Pacific, Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and more. This round of layoffs will also affect first-party studios such as Insomniac Games, Firesprite, Guerrilla, and Naughty Dog to varying degrees.
One of the most significant changes coming from this announcement is the closure of PlayStation’s London studio. This decision will result in the complete shutdown of the studio, along with a reduction in the functions of the British SIE.
In a letter to employees, CEO Jim Ryan acknowledged the difficulty of this decision, stating, “This is not an easy decision and I know it will have a physical and mental impact on (some people). Employees who are laid off will receive severance pay and other support.” Despite the challenges, Ryan emphasized the company’s commitment to remaining competitive and providing the best gaming experience to players now and in the future.
