Now officially registered as an organ donor
The organ donation register of the German Federal Ministry of Health has been online since March 18, 2024. I have carried a completed organ donation card with me in my wallet for as long as I can remember, although I was always worried whether it would be found quickly enough in the event of an emergency. I really like the security of registration.
When I first accessed the website to launch it, the process looked very complicated, but this Sunday morning I remember that I do have an online ID function where I can look up my PIN, that I have already been responsible for the arduous struggle for the Bavarian ID installed the ID app.
Since my ID card needs to be scanned, I start the registration process on my smartphone. You would need a reading device to play the game on a PC: As far as I can remember, this is the first time that an official process has actually only been designed for a smartphone – actually clever, it is much more widespread than a personal computer. Following simple, understandable instructions, I read my ID card by placing it behind my smartphone and verify it with the PIN. After just one round of error messages, I am asked to enter my health insurance number and leave my email address. By clicking on a selection, I can only allow organ donation to a limited extent, transfer the decision to someone else or prohibit it completely.
That’s it, I’m registered as an organ donor in Germany. However, I now have to survive until the summer to be really useful: the implementation schedule on the website lists July 1, 2024 for “on-call collection hospitals”.
