Photos of Franz Kafka and his family

A photo exhibition in Berlin shows pictures of Franz Kafka’s family. In his texts, the writer gives the impression of great distance from his family.

The letter to his father in particular obviously gives a completely false picture of what Kafka’s relationship with his family was like.

Friends and family in pictures

The photo exhibition in the “Stabi Kulturwerk” in the Berlin State Library shows not only the artist, but also his ancestors, his sisters and friends in over 130 photos. The images tell a story that connects the exhibition to the writer’s literature. This results in many new insights into Kafka’s relationship with his relatives.

The showcases not only show the history of a family, but also a picture of cultural, economic and family development from the time of the Habsburg Empire to the time of the first Czech Republic. The viewer of the pictures not only sees the writer Franz Kafka in a completely new way. He also takes an excursion into the past bourgeois world and the period between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. DT/pwi
